"2.0 composer, video artist, both inspired by Haydn's classicism and Brahm's romanticism, ingenious slayer of musical streams that preceded him, this Mandon really belongs to his time"
La Nouvelle République
Since his youngest age, rising young French composer Charly Mandon has been part of the functional tonality movement. Passionate about the economy of means and hyperdevelopment, many of his compositions obstinately use a single musical cell.
De facto a postmodern, he uses a vast language range - from beethovenian classicism to Messiaen's limited modes - as evolving dramatisation tools for his motives. In his Marteau avec maître (The Hammer with a Master), the main theme unfolds from an initial state nearly brahmsian to a dodecaphonic climax.
Rather a slow worker, Charly Mandon brings extreme care to each of his pieces. The latter are regularly created amidst prestigious programmes given by renowned performers such as the pianists Nicholas Angelich, Lucas Debargue and Jérôme Ducros, the conductors Marc Korovitch and Débora Waldman, the violinists David Castrobalbi, Raphaëlle Moreau, David Moreau and Manon Galy or the cellists Bruno Philippe, Ivan Karizna and Jérôme Pernoo. His symphonic works are played by the Colonne Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Avignon-Provence and the Bolivar Symphony Orchestra.
Charly Mandon has been a laureate of the Safran Foundation for music since 2019.
